Philosophy of Teaching
Learning mathematics is a process that requires active involvement. As a teacher, you must provide opportunities for students to become engaged in the learning process. While we may have learned much of mathematics through lecture and rote memorization, that does not give teachers a reason to teach primarily through this method. Mathematics is best learned through activities that allow students to explore and understand the mathematics on their own. Activities such as simulating sine waves and step functions through a motion detector, creating a pie chart from a circle of M & M candies, and folding conic sections on wax paper give students an opportunity to create the math for themselves, which gives them a more concrete grounding for the concepts, and they serve as a way to catch the students' attention. Activities such as the poster research project are a beginning of a realization that math is all around us, and not isolated in the classroom
