In the presence of the UoR president, Asst. Prof. Dr. Paiman R. Ahmed, the UoR council members, the university lecturers and students, as well as archeological experts in the region, the UoR’s General Directorate of Research Center, in collaboration with the University of Munster and the University of Pisa, hosted an international workshop under the title of ‘Protection and Preserving the Cultural Heritage and Artefacts in Archeological Sites in the Raparin Administration’, on Thursday, 05/10/2023.
The workshop began with the speech of the UoR president during which she pointed out the importance of such activities for the purpose of preserving and protecting the heritage in the area. She also urged the officials to do their best to protect the remaining heritage of the Raparin area. Later on, the president of Raparin Tourism Board, Ms. Amal J. Mohammed, delievered a speech on ‘the Impact of Archeological Sites on Tourism’.
The workshop was divided into two panels. The first panel was moderated by Asst. Prof. Dr. Bestoon A. Othman, and the second one was moderated by Asst. Prof. Harem H. Hamad. The following seminars were given during the two panels of the workshop:
1- ‘Gone with the Water; Flooded Heritage and Second-Phase Archeological Salvage in the Ranya Plain’ by Prof. Dr. Jesper Eidem of the University of Pisa
2- ‘Threats and Damage to Cultural Heritage in the Peshder Plain as Exemplified by the Archeological Excavations in Qalat-i Dinka and Gird-i Bazar’ by Prof. Dr. Florian J. Kreppener of University of Munster
3- ‘Before the Flood and (hopefully) After the Covid the Life of the Communities of Ranya Plain Before the Dokan Dam’ by Matteo Merlino of University of Pisa and Jitte Waagen of University of Amsterdam
4- ‘Legislation of Archeological Protection’ by Mr. Kaify M. Ali, General Director of Archeology and Heritage
5- ‘Protection of Archeological Sites from Tourism; Now and Future Action Plans’ by the researcher Ms. Rukhsar Ramazan
6- ‘Role of Security in Protecting Archeology and Cultural Heritage’ by the Raparin Security Director, Mr. Ibrahim Mohammed
The workshop ended with the Q&A discussion session.
